Below are the 3 roots of the upper right 1st molar of a large dog. The dog was presented acting painful on the right side of the mouth and swallowing dry food whole rather than chewing it. The upper right 4th premolar was removed as well. The bone tissue was infected and a small pocket abscess was also found.
Both of the teeth extracted each had 3 roots. In order to safely extract the teeth each tooth had to be cut into 3 separate fragments. That way each root can be extracted separately rather than trying to extract the tooth in whole. The sectioning technique minimizes the amount of bone tissue damaged during the extraction surgery.
The 3 fragments of the tooth were glued back together for illustration of size and configuration. In the mouth the tooth sits as a triangle with the larger root to the tongue (lingual) side and the 2 smaller roots aligned along the cheek (buccal) side.
