Dental Clean, Polish & Flouride Treatment
Dental Home
Penny is a 2 year old Beagle and is one of the 4 legged "kids" living with Dr. & Mrs. Cornprobst.  It is not at all unusual for such a young dog to have significant tartar buildup.  Once a year all the Cornprobst dogs get dentals and blood draws if needed for health screening.  Penny had a blood draw for allergy testing as she has shown symptoms of allergies since joining the family.  Click Here for her allergy story.
After a patient has some predental blood work done they receive a preanesthetic injection. Penny receives medications in a shot that will keep her blood pressure up and also morphine for any pain. By the way, that's her Dad working in the background.Penny's getting a little hair clipped off a leg so she can have an IV catheter placed. She's not too scared because that's her Mom holding and kissing her.The IV catheter has been placed and the Veterinary Technician is taping it in place.OK Penny, you're going to take a nap now. Check out the "Beagle look".Penny is now induced under anesthesia. While Mom holds her mouth open the techician places the endotracheal tube into Penny's trachea (windpipe). The ET tube is properly placed and Penny will now be connected to the oxygen, gas anesthesia machine. It will maintain her as long as needed to complete the procedure.Penny is now connected to all the supportive equipment. She has oxygen, IV fluids, monitoring and body warming care. This unit is connected to her foot and monitors her hearbeat and blood oxygen level. The IV Fluid pump supplies her fluid needs during the dental. While under anesthesia and undergoing any surgical procedure a patient requires 5 times their normal fluid needs per hour. The technician has finished cleaning the tartar off her teeth using an ultrasound scaler. Also Pennys teeth have been probed for any evidence of a problem. Now the technician is polishing her teeth with a flouride polishing paste. This picture shows the tartar buildup on Penny's teeth. In severe cases there would be receeding gum tissue with secondary infection accompanied by pus and blood discharge.Penny's teeth are now sparkling clean and the bacteria laden tartar is all gone. Certainly her breath is more "cuddly" friendly. All pets that are sedated at the Heritage Animal Hospital receive a free, complementary toe nail trim.Penny begins to wake up after her ET tube is removed. She is comfy on the heated recovery floor, wrapped in towels with the hospital staff watching her.Now Penny is ready to get up and walk. She's going to be unsteady for a while but thanks to the modern anesthetics Penny is soon ready for home.
