What is a Board Certified Veterinary Specialist?

They are first of all an extremely dedicated doctor to animals affected by a problem or condition specific to their area of certification.  They do not provide general care to a pet and are obligated to treat the referring veterinarian as the primary care doctor.  It is the same as your cardiologist, urologist, dermatologist, gynecologist, etc providing reports on your care to your family care doctor.
To become Board Certified is a long, challenging and expensive road that a doctor chooses to follow after already spending years in college undergraduate study, then being accepted into the professional veterinary medical school for roughly another 4 years and finally beginning their path to board certification.
Typically that path involves another 3-4 years of working alongside mentor doctors, studying for more exams, working in hospitals and finally taking very intensive board examinations.  Usually a board certified specialist has spent a total of 9-11 years of their life after high school to reach their goal of providing the best animal care they can provide.  Their desire to care for animals obviously is rooted very deep to take such a dedicated, difficult path.  We will refer clients to such doctors when the best interest of the patient is paramount.  We trust them as you trust us.
