Pet Acupuncture Therapy

Veterinarian examining dog in the office

Heritage Animal Hospital offers acupuncture therapy for pets in Dundee, Ann Arbor, Toledo, and Monroe and the surrounding areas. Acupuncture is an alternative treatment based on Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). It’s been practiced for many years as an integrative and complementary therapy to traditional veterinary care.

Dr. Christine is excited to offer this therapy in addition to our regenerative medicine services to help relieve pain, stimulate healing, and to advance recovery from illness. She studied acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.

Similar to acupuncture for humans, veterinary acupuncture involves the use of fine needles at specific pressure points where your pet’s nerves and blood vessels converge. The procedure releases endorphins in the body, which improves blood circulation and tissue oxygen levels and reduces pain and inflammation.

Acupuncture can be used to treat and help manage a variety of medical conditions including (but not limited to):

  • Musculoskeletal disease – arthritis, degenerative joint disease, hip dysplasia, intervertebral disc disease
  • Digestive problems – vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, megacolon
  • Respiratory disease – asthma, laryngeal paralysis
  • Chronic diseases – chronic kidney disease, immune-mediated disease

Your pet will receive a complete physical exam by our doctors and it will be determined if acupuncture is appropriate for your pet. Most animals tolerate acupuncture very well and even find it relaxing. Depending on your pet's medical status, positive results can occur after only a few sessions, improving your pet's overall quality of life.
