PRE-BREEDING HEALTH SCREENINGS

For a list of health screenings recommended for your breed please visit the Canine Health Information Center.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

Hip and elbow dysplasia are abnormal formations of the hip or elbow joint. This abnormal development can cause excessive wear of cartilage, which often leads to arthritis and/or degenerative joint disease. As a result of hip and elbow dysplasia having a genetic component, Heritage Animal Hospital recommends screening dogs for this condition prior to breeding.

Currently, radiographs for hip and elbow dysplasia screenings are taken Monday-Thursday by Dr. Amanda. Appointments may be scheduled 4-6 weeks out depending on demand and time of year.

OFA Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

At Heritage Animal Hospital, we pride ourselves in taking the best quality radiographs possible through the use of ideal positioning for each patient. Taking quality radiographs is always a team effort that couldn’t be achieved without the help of our highly skilled staff members. When sedation is needed, we try to use only minimal sedation to achieve optimal positioning.

Dogs younger than two can still have radiographs submitted to OFA, however, the result is considered preliminary, and final radiographs are still recommended after the age of two.

OFA recommends but does not require the use of sedation.

Prices:

  • Hips & Elbow Radiographs $315 (includes $40 OFA application fee)
  • Hip Radiographs Only $225 (includes $35 OFA application fee)
  • Elbow Radiograph Only $160 (includes $35 OFA application fee)

Currently, radiographs for hip and elbow dysplasia screenings are taken Monday-Thursday by Dr. Amanda. Appointments may be scheduled 4-6 weeks out depending on demand and time of year.

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

PennHIP

PennHIP measures hip joint laxity as a way to predict the onset of osteoarthritis. Three views are required for submission of radiographs through PennHIP. Sedation is required and is included in pricing.

The first radiograph is the same extended hip view as OFA to evaluate for any evidence of osteoarthritis. The second view is known as a compression view. In this view, the hips are positioned in a neutral orientation that mimics the position a dog would be in if it were standing, with the femoral heads compressed fully into the hip socket allowing visualization of depth of the hip socket. The final radiograph is called a distraction view where a dog is positioned the same as for a compression view, but a positioning device is placed between the legs, and the legs are pulled together, showing the laxity of the hip joint.

We typically have results within 3-5 business days. The result is a quantitative number on a scale of zero to one. The lower the number, the less laxity and, in theory, the less risk there is for developing osteoarthritis in the future.

PennHIP only evaluates hips. If you also wish to submit elbows, they’ll need to be submitted through OFA or an alternate registry (SV, BVA, etc.) Since PennHIP requires the same view as OFA, we can submit hip radiographs to OFA for no additional charge other than the OFA application fee.

Prices:

  • PennHIP $450 (includes application fee and sedation)
  • PennHIP with OFA Elbows $565 (includes all application fees and sedation)

Please click here for information on PennHIP.

ASTAMP/SV (Germany)

Heritage Animal Hospital is also experienced in the submission of radiographs to Germany for their hip and elbow dysplasia screenings. The standard hip extended view (the same view required by OFA) is taken to evaluate the hips, and sedation is required.

The elbow view is slightly different than that required by OFA. Therefore, if you elect to submit to both OFA and SV, two different views of the elbows will be required. All radiographs are submitted digitally to SV. The application form is filled out and signed during the appointment, and the owner is given the original for submission. In most cases, the application is submitted through USCA. However, in the past, we’ve completed applications for other methods of submission based on owner preference.

Pricing:

  • ASTAMP/SV Hip and Elbows - $300 (includes sedation and digital submission to Germany)
  • ASTAMP/SV Hip, Elbows & Spine - $350 (includes sedation, lateral projection of spine in addition to standard views and digital submission to Germany)

Currently, radiographs for hip and elbow dysplasia screenings are taken Monday-Thursday by Dr. Amanda. Appointments may be scheduled 4-6 weeks out depending on demand and time of year.

BVA (British Veterinary Association)

Submission of hip and elbow radiographs through BVA is now offered digitally through Heritage Animal Hospital. Digital submissions drastically reduce the time it takes to receive results. Much like radiographs submitted to Germany, the hip view is the same as OFA. However, the elbow view is different, requiring two different views of each elbow.

One view is similar to the flexed view used by OFA (the same radiograph can be used for submission to both); however, one additional view of each elbow is also required.

Please contact us for pricing.

OFA Tracheal Hypoplasia

(Bulldogs and brachycephalic breeds)

Tracheal hypoplasia is a congenital condition that occurs when there is a growth abnormality of the cartilage rings that make up the trachea, causing the airway to be narrowed. Tracheal hypoplasia can be a component of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) that leads to breathing problems we can see in Bulldogs and related brachycephalic breeds.

This test requires a radiograph to be taken of the dog’s thorax (chest) during peak inspiration and for the dog to be over 12 months of age. A ratio of the the tracheal lumen diameter (TLR) at the thoracic inlet to the width of the proximal third rib is determined. Normal results have a TLR greater than or equal to 2.0.

Pricing:

  • OFA Tracheal Hypoplasia - $175 (includes $25 application fee)

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

BAER Testing for Congenital Deafness

Heritage Animal Hospital is proud to now be able to offer Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing to evaluate for congenital deafness. This test can be performed per OFA standards in puppies and dogs 35 days old and older, however most commonly litters of puppies are done around 7-8 weeks of age. It has been documented that dogs can lose hearing up to 16 weeks of age and retesting may be recommended, especially prior to breeding or if test results were questionable or equivocal on the first reading.

This test takes 5-15 minutes to perform based on patient cooperation and is done so by placing small electrodes below each ear and on top of the head. A small ear piece is then placed within the ear that is being tested and a signal equivalent to a normal hearing level (between 70-105 dB) is used to obtain a response in dogs with normal hearing.

Pricing:

  • BAER Testing Individual Dog - $75
  • BAER Testing >3 Dogs - $65 per dog
  • BAER Testing for Litters of up to 5 puppies - $195, each additional puppy $20
  • Sedation (if needed for BAER testing) - $20

**Pricing does not include OFA application fees

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

OFA Shoulder

Radiographs of each shoulder are taken and submitted to OFA to evaluate for evidence of osteochondrosis (OCD), degenerative joint disease (DJD), or other orthopedic problems. Preliminary radiographs can be sent in for dogs under 12 months of age. Dogs must be over 12 months of age for final certification and results.

Pricing:

  • OFA Shoulder Alone - $165 (includes $25 OFA application fee)
  • OFA Shoulder with OFA Hips and/or Elbows - $100 (includes $5 OFA application fee)

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

OFA Patellar Luxation

This test is done by manual palpation of the stifles (knees) and does not require radiographs. This tests for both medial and lateral luxation. Results will either be normal, with no evidence of luxation or will be Graded 1-4 based on severity.

Pricing:

  • OFA Patella Alone - $45 (includes $15 OFA application fee)
  • OFA Patella with any other OFA Service - $35 (includes $15 OFA application fee)

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

OFA Thyroid

This sample requires a blood draw and tests thyroid function. Results are classified as normal or abnormal. Abnormal results defined by OFA’s registry include Autoimmune Thyroiditis, which is known to be heritable, or Idiopathically (cause unknown) reduced thyroid function. There are also instances where the result can come back as equivocal, in which case repeating the test at a later date is recommended. Female dogs should not be tested during an estrus cycle.

Fasting for this test is recommended, but not required. The thyroid database is for dogs over 12 months of age.

Pricing:

  • OFA Thyroid - $175 (includes $15 OFA application fee)

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

OFA Dentition

The dentition database is to certify dogs with all adult teeth fully erupted. As stated on OFA’s website, the database does not certify overall dental health, misaligned teeth or dentition in accordance with a breed standard.

Pricing:

  • OFA Dentition with OFA Radiographs - $15 (includes $15 OFA application fee)
  • OFA Dentition alone - $45 (includes $15 OFA application fee)

Forms for OFA Testing can be found on the OFA website.

BREEDING SERVICES

Ovulation Timing

At Heritage Animal Hospital, we are pleased to offer same day progesterone testing with results within 30 minutes for most cases. Timing of ovulation allows us to help you accurately time breedings or inseminations to increase success rates in conception. Timing of ovulation also helps to more accurately predict due dates, which is especially important for breeds that may require caesarean sections.

Artificial Insemination

Inseminations may be performed vaginally, transcervically (TCI) or surgically.

Transcervical inseminations are done through the use of a rigid endoscope. This technique is minimally invasive and studies have shown similar success rates compared to surgical inseminations. Inseminations can be performed using freshly collected or fresh chilled semen at Heritage Animal Hospital at this time. If you are planning to use frozen semen for a breeding we are able to help with ovulation timing and will coordinate a referral for the insemination.

Caesarean Sections

Our doctors and staff at Heritage Animal Hospital are experienced with caesarean sections. We offer planned caesarean sections for our established breeder clientele when necessary and every attempt is made to accommodate emergency caesarean sections during our regular office hours. If after hours, we do recommend referral to Emergency Veterinary Hospital or Ann Arbor Animal Hospital, both located in Ann Arbor.

If you have any questions about Heritage Animal Hospital breeder services, please call us at (734) 529-9177.
